Dr. Herbert West & Astounding Tales of Medical Malpractice

Y'all, I cannot wait to read this with my kids.

Thank you to @night_worms and @astounding_herbert_west for this copy. We read it as part of a #nightwormsbookparty and it was such a fun change of pace from what we normally read.

Young Dr. Herbert West makes a concoction one day when he is working in the lab that will make the dead rise and walk the earth again. When his experiment fails, chaos ensues. Herbert and his sister, Elizabeth, must find a way to stop the zombies and save their city.

When I talk about zombies here, I'm not talking about the zombies that will rip you trachea out with their teeth. I'm talking about zombies that only want to eat Johnny Cakes. I have never had a Johnny Cake before, but I have a feeling I'm going to be finding some soon.

I loved this sister-brother relationship built in this book. It felt really genuine. I have a brother and there were certain exchanges I could totally see he and I saying. It's always nice to see siblings that work together (since my daughters apparently can't).

The artwork is so beautiful. I'm an artist and this blue-purple analogous color scheme is my favorite to work with. The character design was perfect to me. They characters were adorable and their design reminds me of a few cartoons from the 60's.

Overall, this book is fun, short and great for young readers. It's definitely something I can let my kids read to make sure they're starting off right within the horror genre.
